A one-way ticket to paradise?

The state of Florida has approximately 1,000 people moving to The Sunshine State each day. In normal years, many of these transplants have moved here from northeastern states like New York. This year, the pandemic has increased the exodus from highly congested states such as New York and other states. Thus far, more than 300,000 New Yorkers have bailed from the Big Apple in the last eight months, new statistics show. Below is a list of the top 10 zip codes that New Yorkers exited between March 31 and October 31, 2020:

1. Upper West Side (zip code 10023) = 3,368

2. Upper West Side (zip code 10025) = 3,000

3. Murray Hill (zip code 10016) = 2,889

4. Upper West Side (zip code 10024) = 2,708

5. Chelsea/Greenwich Village (zip code 10011) = 2,520

Why are New Yorkers fleeing?

The escape from New York is fueled not only by coronavirus concerns but economic worries, school chaos, and rising crime, experts say. Of course, the pandemic and fear of the virus has ultimately been the driving force behind the exodus out of the city. In addition, crime rates have risen in the past 8 months and many are highly concerned by this. Lastly, economic concerns such as rising taxes has also fueled these moves. Factor in the ability to work remotely for many, and this has opened the door for many more people to consider a relocation.

Where are New Yorkers moving to?

A majority of New Yorkers changing zip codes have moved to the suburbs within the New York or New Jersey areas. As for those that have moved out of the state completely, Florida continues to be the desired destination. In particular, South Florida is the most common landing spot. As a matter of fact, according to postal data there were 13,009 change of address requests for the Sunshine State counties of Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade.
