Do Pets Impact Homes Listed for Sale?

Selling a home with a pet
Pets may impact a home's selling ability.

If you have ever sold a home and have pets, it is likely that your real estate agent recommended hiding your pets and their possessions for showings. Interestingly, a recent study from Quicken Loans found that pets in the property does not negatively impact interest from most buyers. In fact, buyers that also happen to be pet lovers may even become more interested in the property and have an overall better feeling about the seller.

Study findings

  • 79% of buyers making an offer say signs of a pet in a property won’t deter them, as long as damage from the pet isn’t present.
  • Almost 20% of buyers said that signs of pets would even increase their desire to make an offer if there was no damage to the property.
  • Pet ownership has been increasing over the years with about 70% of American households owning a pet as of this year.
  • For perspective, 56% of American households owned a pet in 1988.

Summary

The key for pet owners that list their homes for sale is to first ensure that safety measures are adhered to for when home showings take place with animals on the premises. In addition, it is important to ensure that there are no damages to the home as a result of the pet. Lastly, strong pet odors are common deal breakers for prospective buyers. As with any showings, it is critical to maintain the home clean and orderly at all times.
