Florida is spared from hurricanes again

Florida's 2021 hurricane season is coming to an end
We are at the end of the 2021 hurricane season.

For the second straight year, The Sunshine State has managed to dodge several bullets fired from hurricane season. The good news of course is that no major storms made landfall in Florida during the 2021 hurricane season. The bad news is that this year marks the second consecutive hurricane season that has exhausted the list of storm names. As refresher, the hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th. Therefore, December 1st will officially mark the end of the hurricane season.

Hurricane season overview

Overall, this past hurricane season was an active one. Although Louisiana took a few hits this season, those storms were simply a few wobbles away from making landfall in Florida. For the 2021 hurricane season, Florida only had brushes with 3 named systems (Elsa, Fred, & Mindy) which were primarily rainmakers with tropical-storm force winds. Unfortunately, this year marked the sixth consecutive above-average storm season. During this time, Florida suffered historic strikes from Irma in 2017 and Michael in 2018.

Summary

The Atlantic saw 21 named storms this season. This marks the third-most active season on record. This season included seven hurricanes and four reaching Category 3 strength. In fact, we had tropical system “Ana” form on May 22nd. This marked the seventh consecutive year in which a system emerged before the June 1 designated start of the season. Needless to say, Floridians must certainly not let their guard down even though we have managed to avoid significant major storm landfalls in the past several years. This is actually an ideal time to prepare for next year’s hurricane season. Whether you are looking to install high-impact windows and doors or hurricane shutters, now is the time to do so. If you wait too long, many contractors will be too busy to have these items installed prior to the beginning of the next hurricane season. Furthermore, it is important to account for many supply-chain challenges being seen throughout the economy.
