Generation Z: The Next Force in Real Estate

Generation Z and real estate
Generation Z is on deck to begin buying homes.

Generation Z, also known as “Zoomers”, is the demographic cohort succeeding the Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. Typically, Generation Z is thought to be the children of Generation X parents. This group was typically born in the mid to late 1990’s through the 2010’s. Although Milliennials garner most of the attention in the real estate market these days, considering that they make up the lion’s share of home buyers, Generation Z seems to be primed to enter the real estate market over the next five years or so. In fact, a® report found that 40% of surveyed Generation Z’ers are planning to purchase a home within 5 years.

Marketing to Generation Z

If you think that Millennials are tech savvy, just wait until you see Generation Z’ers. This demographic grew up virtually their entire lives with mobile devices and social media. Needless to say, this group tends to gravitate towards video content. Therefore, platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, & YouTube tend to dominate their online consumption. As for the most popular social media platform, Generation Z’ers prefer Snapchat. You can read more on this here.

As a home seller potentially targeting likely Generation Z buyers, it is important that you and your agent think creatively to meet these buyers where they are. Although virtual tours and listing videos remain important, you may also want to consider short videos of the listing agent describing some key features of the property. In addition, incorporating some music throughout the video can’t hurt. For sharing on the various social platforms, try to stick with short videos of around a minute or so with a call to action at the end. Ideally, the videos should provide easy ways to contact the listing agent for more information.

More than any other generation, this demographic of buyers wants to seek a connection. It is important that you and your real estate agent identify the various ways to increase your chances of making these connections with this important demographic. As always, hiring a local and knowledgeable real estate agent is critical in any market. Ideally, your agent will be quite familiar with the most likely target audience of buyers for your home and can implement marketing strategies effectively to reach them.
