Hurricane Sales Tax Holiday

2022 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday
From May 28th through June 10th, 2022, Floridians can save sales tax on many hurricane preparedness items.

It is that time of the year again… hurricane season! If you have lived in Florida for any number of years, then you know the importance of hurricane preparedness. For those of you that may be new to The Sunshine State, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th. With this said, it is never too early to prepare for a storm. Fortunately, you can take advantage of the current 2022 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, which runs from May 28th through June 10th. During this time, you will be able to purchase eligible hurricane preparedness items tax free.

Eligible tax-free items

  • Selling for $20 or less: reusable ice packs
  • Selling for $40 or less: any self-powered light sources (i.e. lanterns, flashlights, & candles, etc…)
  • Selling for $50 or less: any gas or diesel fuel containers, batteries, or portable radios
  • Selling for $60 or less: coolers, ice chests, and portable battery banks
  • Selling for $70 or less: fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors or alarms
  • Selling for $100 or less: bungee cords, group anchor systems, ratchet straps, tarps, & tie-down kits
  • Selling for $1,000 or less: portable generators

A new feature for 2022 also includes pet evacuation supplies. Items such as pet food, leashes, collars, pet beds, pet carriers, and other items may also qualify for the tax-free savings!

Summary

Forecasters are predicting another active hurricane season. (We will likely discuss this in more depth in a future article.) With this said, it is never to early to prepare your plan should we be impacted by a storm. Currently, there is a 6% sales tax for the state of Florida. In Southeast Florida, Palm Beach, Broward, & Dade counties also have an additional 1% county sales tax. Therefore, you can expect a savings of 7% on hurricane preparedness items between May 28th and June 10th, 2022. With the latest national inflation rate being reported as 8.3%, the 7% sales tax savings can help offset the recent price pains at the register.
