I Don’t Like My Neighbor

Do you like your neighbors?
Most Americans have a neighbor that they don't like.

As everyone knows, we can’t always pick our neighbors (unless we own the neighboring properties). If you do not like one or several of your neighbors, you are not alone. In fact, 73% of Americans do not like one of their neighbors. On the slip side, 74% of Americans are friends with at least one neighbor. Recently, LendingTree surveyed 1,537 consumers to get the good, the bad and the ugly about life in their neighborhoods. We discuss some of the most common reasons for the dislike below, but a link to the full article can be found here.

Reasons Americans dislike their neighbors

  • 28%: “They give off a weird vibe.”
  • 27%: “They’re too loud.”
  • 27%: “They’re rude.”
  • 17%: “They’re pets cause disruption.”
  • 16%: “They’re noisy or a busybody.”
  • 16%: “They don’t maintain their home’s exterior.”
  • 13%: “They’re kids are noisy or unruly.”
  • 13%: “They’re guests park their car in front of my house or take my parking spot.”
  • 11%: “They smoke and I hate the smell.”
  • 4%: “I don’t agree with their political views.”
  • 3%: “They use their home as a short-term rental.”

Summary

Given today’s tight inventory of homes for sale, more and more home buyers are having to make concessions when buying a home. We actually wrote about this topic in a previous article that can be found here. Of course, if you are trying to get a better feel for a neighborhood and ultimately a home’s neighbors, it is recommended to pass by the property during the evenings or weekends. Since most people work during business hours and children attend school during the daytime, you have a better chance to see more activity in the neighborhood during the evenings and weekends. If you happen to see any homeowners in a neighborhood, you can also ask them for their feedback. In the end, the data shows that it is quite likely that you may not like at least one of your neighbors. However, just like this may be the case in the workplace, you can typically find a way to make it work.
