If you currently live in Florida, then you probably don’t need to read this article to know that there are more people moving to Florida than out of Florida. In fact, there is a good chance that your commute to work or anywhere else is taking a bit longer these days. It is estimated that approximately 808 people move to Florida each day! Interestingly, do-it-yourself moving companies such as U-Haul as well as various full-service moving companies track the number of one-way moves being conducted throughout the country. If a state has more one-way moves coming in of greater than 55%, then it is considered an “inbound state”. If a state has more one-way moves going out of greater than 55%, then it is considered an “outbound state”. We share some of these findings below.
U-Haul moving data
Each year, U-Haul tracks over 2 million one-way transactions across the U.S. and Canada. For 2022, only state of Texas had more one-way transactions than Florida. Actually, Florida has been ranked #2 for five of the past seven years. (Florida was ranked #1 in 2019 & #3 in 2020.) U-Haul also tracks the top growth cities for inbound moves. Not surprisingly, several Florida cities made the top 25 list as follows:
- #1. Ocala, FL
- #4. Palm Bay-Melbourne, FL
- #6. North Port, FL
- #21. Lakeland, FL
Full-service moving data
Of course, not all individuals or families opt for a “do-it-yourself” approach when moving. Fortunately, four of the large national van lines do report these migration patterns in their annual reports. Companies such as Allied Van Lines, Atlas Van Lines, North American Van Lines, & United Van Lines all track these patterns and share detailed data in their reports each year. When analyzing these data, it is good to see a consensus across all four reports in order to rule out any outlier findings. Based on these cumulative data, only four states were considered to be “inbound states” (55% or more people moving into the state versus out of the state) in 2022. These states were as follows:
- Tennessee
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- Florida
Top inbound Florida cities
As for the Sunshine State, the following cities ranked in the top 20 list for those moving to Florida:
- #5. Punta Gorda, FL
- #7. Sarasota, FL
- #10. Ft. Myers-Cape Coral, FL
- #12. Fort Pierce-St. Lucie, FL
- #13. Daytona Beach, FL
- #19. West Palm Beach-Boca Raton, FL
