Out of state moving tips

Tips for out of state movers
"The Great Reshuffling" has resulted in many out-of-state moves. We offer some helpful tips.

If you are like many Americans during the pandemic, you may be moving across state lines or even across the country in some cases. Naturally, this can be an intimidating and even somewhat overwhelming experience. As with anything else, thorough preparation is the key to success. Below we discuss some helpful tips to consider when embarking on such a significant move.

Attention to details

  • Choosing the right moving service: Everyone knows that not all moving service companies are created equal. We have probably all heard horror stories from those with less than pleasant experiences. With this said, it is important to begin with obtaining company referrals from your personal network. A good starting point is with your real estate agent. Furthermore, you will want to confirm that any company you consider is willing to do cross state line or cross country moves. Another consideration will be whether or not the company is willing to work with animals. This is a detail that is often overlooked, unfortunately.
  • Set up your mail to be forwarded: Although tedious, it is critically important to ensure that you schedule your mail to be forwarded to your new address. If you do not have a new address to move to, you may want to consider opening a P.O. Box at your destination in the meantime. This will ensure that you do not miss important bills and other mail.
  • Research your destination: It is always a good idea to familiarize with the local and state requirements as they may differ from state to state. You will also want to have a good understanding of your new location’s police and fire departments, grocery stores, hospitals, and schools. If you are moving into a new home that you are purchasing, it is a good idea to obtain a list of recommended contractors from your local real estate agent as well. Examples of some of these may be: landscaper, pool maintenance person, electrician, plumber, and handyman.
