Single women are outpacing single men in home buying

More single women home buyers
We are seeing a higher proportion of single women buyers in the market.

Did you know? According to a report from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), women could not legally obtain a mortgage without a co-signer until 1974. Fast forward to the present time, and now single women have risen to the top of the home buying trend. In fact, only married couples buy more homes (as expected).

Fun facts

  • The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) began collecting this data in 1981.
  • Currently, 60% of buyers are married couples, 19% are single women and 9% are single men.
  • The highest share of single women buyers on record was 22% in 2006.
  • The share of single women buyers decreased to 15% in 2015.
  • Since 2015, the share of single women buyers has rebounded to 19%.

Summary

These results are not surprising, particularly considering the increase in number of women entering the workforce when this data collection began in 1981. Furthermore, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) cites the drop in share of Americans that are married as a primary reason for the increase in single women buyers. In fact, census data shows that 50% of the American public was married in 1990. Today, this figure is 52% in the U.S. Furthermore, family obligations such as caring for children, siblings, or grandparents are also reasons for more single women purchasing homes.
