In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, most Americans are trying to reduce their carbon footprint these days, while also looking for sustainable alternatives for virtually everything. Recently, the travel insurance company battleface set out to determine the 50 greenest cities in the U.S. The results of this study can be found here.
Parameters of the study
This study looked at all cities throughout all regions of the country. Ultimately, all cities were measured in the following 5 key areas:
- 1. Sustainable transportation options
- 2. Access to parks and green space
- 3. Carbon emissions
- 4. Electric vehicle infrastructure
- 5. Vegan friendliness
The results
Overall, The Sunshine State had two cities represented in the top 50 list: Miami, FL (#26) & Jacksonville, FL (#37). Interestingly, Miami ranked #1 in the country for vegan options and #2 for electric vehicle infrastructure. However, the other categories dropped its overall ranking (i.e. #37 – public transportation; #41 – carbon emissions; #44 for green space). As for the top 10 greenest cities in the country, they were as follows:
- #1. Washington, D.C.
- #2. New York, NY
- #3. Portland , OR
- #4. Seattle, WA
- #5. Boston, MA
- #6. Las Vegas, NV
- #7. Los Angeles, CA
- #8. San Francisco, CA
- #9. Chicago, IL
- #10. Denver, CO
Summary
Needless to say, The Sunshine State would have certainly ranked in the top 10 of this list if there were better public transportation. With this said, there is hope that with the Brightline train expanding from South Florida into Orlando, we may see more Floridians utilizing alternative forms of transportation. For our clients in the Boca Raton, FL area, Brightline broke ground on a new station in January of this year with a targeted completion date in the Fall of 2022! (You can read more here.) Ultimately, this rail is planning to connect from Miami to Tampa!
With the population continuing to increase throughout South Florida, transportation options such as the Brightline train will likely become more popular.
