In fact, Mrs. Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Montana came up with the idea of a national holiday recognizing the importance of good neighbors in 1971. President Jimmy Carter went on to proclaim it as a national holiday in 1978. For those of you that have good neighbors, you know how valuable this can be. Recently, Neighbor.com surveyed 1,000 Americans to find out which cities represent the best in neighborliness in terms of charitable giving, volunteerism, happiness, and more. This survey only analyzed the largest 100 metropolitan areas, but also included surrounding suburbs, towns, and smaller urban areas. Below is their top 10 list.

- #3. Portland, OR: $558,000
- #4. Minneapolis, MN: $355,000
- #5. Des Moines, IA: $305,300

- #7. Boston, MA: $659,000
- #8. Seattle, WA: $675,000
- #9. Pittsburgh, PA: $232,500
- #10. Milwaukee, WI: $289,900
Summary
Interestingly, the top 10 most neighborly metropolitan cites all have colder climates in common. In addition, the median home list prices for these cities can vary dramatically. Although The Sunshine State was not represented in this top 10 list, we would be willing to put South Florida living up against any other place in the country.
