How about a staycation this year?
Vacationing on a budget? How about a staycation?

Americans are certainly feeling the impacts of 40-year high inflation. To add to the current financial challenges for many Americans, record-high fuel prices are now adding additional pressures to many households. During financially difficult times like this, it is common for households to analyze their budgets and make the necessary adjustments to cut costs. Naturally, one of the most common budget cuts tends to be nonessential travel, including vacations. One popular way to plan a vacation on a budget is simply incorporating a “staycation”.

Staycation success

To plan a successful staycation, the following tips should be considered:

  • Set a responsible budget: Let’s face it, a major reason for planning a staycation is likely due to budgetary constraints. Define the types of experiences that you would like and you should be able to budget accordingly.
  • Think and act like a tourist in your own town: There are likely some popular landmarks in the area that are common attractions. Oftentimes, locals never even visit these attractions. A staycation provides the opportunities take advantage of these experiences. Whether it is a museum, park, or a zoo, there are likely some popular attractions locally.
  • Incorporate some time for relaxation: As with any vacation, it is important that your staycation also includes some time for relaxation. Whether this is some time by the pool or just taking a nap in the hammock, a staycation is an opportunity to recharge.
  • Rent a room: If your budget permits, it is a good idea to stay somewhere other than your home. This will allow you to feel like you are truly on vacation. In South Florida for example, there are plenty of hotel or vacation rental options. If your staycation takes place during the summer, you should even be able to take advantage of off-season rates which tend to be lower than those season during the peak winter months.

Summary

Record-high inflation combined with now record-high fuel prices is having a significant impact on most American families. Now more than ever, a staycation may be the most viable option for many. The good news about a staycation is that it allows you to appreciate more local attractions than you probably do otherwise.
