Tips to improve your home’s indoor air quality

Improving your home's air quality
Your home's air quality should always be on top of mind. We discuss some helpful tips.

The air quality of your home can have a significant impact on your family’s overall respiratory health. Often overlooked, these air contaminants can cause respiratory issues over time and possibly lead to more serious illnesses down the road. With just a few simple preventative maintenance tips, you can ensure that your family’s health is not compromised due to your home’s air quality.

Simple steps to better air quality

  • Change your air filters regularly: Although this seems obvious, it is one of the most overlooked household maintenance tasks. We have probably all seen how disgusting an old air filter looks after it has not been replaced for some time. In addition to comprising your air quality, this may also put additional strain on your HVAC system leading to costly repairs. While there are various options for air filters, we recommend using a basic filter and replacing it monthly as opposed to more expensive filters that advertise lasting 3 months or so. Furthermore, some of these “premium”, thicker air filters can place additional strain on your HVAC system.
  • Keep the home clean: The simple fact is that a clean home is less likely to have airborne contaminants than a filthy home. Dust, pet dander, and other debris is likely to get distributed through the air in a filthy home. In particular, items such as carpeting, fabric curtains, and rugs are well known to collect these contaminants. It is very important to clean these items regularly using a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
  • Preventative maintenance for your HVAC system: Even if you are diligent with your air filter changes, it is important to have your HVAC system serviced by a HVAC contractor at least once per year. In South Florida, these contractors can get quite busy during the summer months. Therefore, we recommend having your HVAC system serviced every spring. In doing this, an HVAC contractor will be able to thoroughly clean your system and clear any condensation lines as well. To ensure optimal performance of your HVAC system, you can even consider scheduling a preventative service twice per year. In doing so, you should be able to extend the life of your HVAC system as well.
  • Consider using air purifiers in your home: There are various options for air purifiers. Although whole house air purifiers that are attached to your HVAC system are pricey, they can be quite effective. For more economical approaches, you may consider individual units to be used in the bedrooms.

Summary

Throughout the pandemic, people are spending even more time at home than before. For this reason alone, it is even more important that the air quality of your home should not be compromised. A few simple steps can make a significant impact in ensuring your family’s respiratory health is not compromised. In addition, this is also a significant factor for home sellers to consider as well. After all, nothing can turn away prospective buyers than a filthy home with poor air quality.
