It is no secret that the mass exodus of Americans from states such as New York, New Jersey, and California has continued even during the pandemic. The Sunshine State has long been a destination for many across the country, but what are the reasons why? The recent United Van Lines 2020 Movers Study looked at inbound and outbound moves across all states. The results provide some additional insights as to not only where Americans are moving to, but also why they are moving.
Reasons for the migration to Florida
With 37% of those relocating to Florida being older than 65 years of age, it is no secret that retirement came in as the number one reason for the move to Florida. In addition, nearly 70% of those relocating to Florida are older than 55 years of age. The highest proportion of retirees moving out is from the northeastern states, like New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine and New York, as well as some Midwest areas.
Overall, 39% of Americans surveyed in this study cited retirement as the primary reason for their move to Florida. However, the other top reasons for the move were as follows:
- Jobs: 23%
- Lifestyle: 21%
- Family: 17%
Summary
Overall, the results of the United Van Lines 2020 Movers Study shed some light of some recent moving trends. With this said, it is important to note that outbound movers tend to indicate higher incomes and therefore these findings likely have some selection bias. As you can imagine, not all Americans use moving services such as those offered by United Van Lines. Nonetheless, when analyzing these data along with census data, it is evident that more and more Americans are choosing Florida as their final destination.
Interestingly, many companies are considering a relocation to Florida as well. Needless to say, the future of the Florida housing market & economy overall appear to be on the right track.
